How to Maintain Your Deck in Louisville KY
By Ruth Fence and Deck · 2026-06-19 · Louisville, KY
A well-maintained deck in Louisville can last 20–25 years. A neglected one might last 8–10. The difference is a few hours of work each year and a staining job every 2–3 years. Here's our complete annual maintenance guide for Louisville homeowners.
Spring Inspection Checklist
Do this every April or May after winter is fully over:
- Check for soft spots — Walk the entire deck pressing your foot firmly. Any bounce or give could indicate rotted joists below
- Inspect posts and footings — Look for leaning posts, cracks in concrete footings, or rot at the base of posts
- Check the ledger board — The board attached to your house is the most critical structural element. Look for gaps, rust stains from failing fasteners, or water damage
- Test all railings — Push hard on every section. Any movement is a safety issue
- Check stair stringers — The diagonal supports under stairs rot faster than anything else on a deck
- Look for popped nails and screws — Secure any fasteners that have worked their way up
Annual Cleaning
Clean your deck every spring before staining season:
- Sweep off all debris — leaves left over winter hold moisture and accelerate rot
- Use a deck cleaner or oxygen bleach solution to remove mold, mildew, and gray weathering
- Pressure wash at low to medium pressure — too high and you'll raise the wood grain
- Let dry completely before staining — at least 48 hours of dry weather
The Staining Schedule
In Louisville's climate, wood decks need re-staining every 2–3 years. Do the water bead test: splash water on the deck surface. If it beads up, you're still protected. If it soaks in immediately, it's time to stain.
Best time to stain in Louisville: late April through May, or September through October. Avoid staining in direct summer heat or before rain.
New Deck? Wait Before Staining
New pressure-treated lumber needs to dry out for 3–6 months before stain will penetrate properly. Cedar can be stained almost immediately. Don't rush the first staining on a treated pine deck.
Winter Prep
- Clear all furniture and planters — standing water under them accelerates rot
- Don't use metal shovels on composite decking — they scratch the surface
- Avoid rock salt on wood decks — it accelerates weathering. Use sand or calcium chloride instead
- Clear ice carefully — let it melt naturally when possible
When to Call a Professional
Call us if you find soft spots underfoot, a ledger board pulling away from the house, significant rot in posts or joists, or railings that won't stay tight. These are structural issues that need professional repair before the deck is safe to use.
